Statue and granite commemorative pavers
The
dedication of the CCC Workers Statue in
Edinburg
,
VA
will be held on
Saturday, May 17, 2008. The event will take
place at the Lee District Rangers Office in
Edinburg
beginning at
11:00 am. Activities will be split
between the statue dedication at the sight of the future CCC
Interpretive Center
and
Camp
Roosevelt
on the
Massanutten
Mountain.
Potomac Chapter 13 will serve as a co-host.
Chapter #13 has participated in the fundraising for the Camp
Roosevelt
statue and in conjunction with their generous support the Chapter
will serve as a sponsor.
The day’s activities will focus on remembering the past and
reaching toward the future. The
statue dedication will be a focal point for the 75th
Anniversary celebration for the CCC Legacy in
Virginia
in partnership with the
Lee
District
on the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
Special guests will be Aaron Shapiro, Chief Historian for the
USDA FS, Washington Office; Acting Forest Supervisor, Linda Brett;
Sally Prouty, President and CEO of the Corps Network; and Stan Cohen,
author of the “The Tree Army: A
pictorial History of the CCC.
The event will include: the rededication of the

Forest; the dedication of the CCC Quilt created by the Dorcus Quilters of
Woodstock, VA; and, a book signing by author Stan Cohen.

setting.
Through Executive Order, 86731, President Roosevelt designated
the Massanutten Unit of the
George
Washington
National Forest
as The Fechner Memorial Forest to honor Robert Fechner, the first
director of the CCC. Early
signage educated the public about the memorial area but they have long
since fallen into disrepair. In
the 75th anniversary year interpretive signs made of modern
materials will be placed in the
Camp
Roosevelt
area to remember the history of Robert Fechner.
It is documented that Robert Fechner visited
Camp
Roosevelt
on
May 16, 1933
, seventy-five years ago.
CCC alumni will be the honored guests.
The meal is a gift to CCC alumni; however, registration is
still necessary or the purposes of organizing special recognition and
