Author and Photographer Paul Horsted, "Exploring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition"

Author Paul Horsted General Phillip Sheridan, ordered an exploration of the Black Hills area, and in 1874 George Armstrong Custer lead an expedition into the Black Hills to follow up on the rumors that gold had been found.  In his caravan were a cadre of laypeople of different professions and among them was an English born photographer, named William Illingworth.   Through his photographs, Mr. Illingworth captured a series of images that tell a vivid story of the expedition.  The book written by Mr. Horsted recreates the expedition through photographs and diaries.  Please visit his website for more information about this compelling facet of Black Hills history.   www.custertrail.com

Mount Rushmore Memorial -  National Park Service

Great faces - Great places: The South Dakota theme that refers to the sculpted faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.   Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the Mount Rushmore Memorial stands as a testament to American patriotism and ingenuity.  Created between the years of 1927 and 1941, the project was plagued with construction and funding woes.  CCC workers constructed early trails and stone walls that still stand as a tribute to their work.  National Park Chief Interpreter, Judy Olson, describes the stone work of the CCC as just as beautiful as the sculpture. As the daughter of a former CCC enrollee she has great appreciation for the CCC.
