Mount Rushmore Memorial - National Park Service Great faces - Great places: The South Dakota theme that refers to the sculpted faces of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the Mount Rushmore Memorial stands as a testament to American patriotism and ingenuity. Created between the years of 1927 and 1941, the project was plagued with construction and funding woes. CCC workers constructed early trails and stone walls that still stand as a tribute to their work. National Park Chief Interpreter, Judy Olson, describes the stone work of the CCC as just as beautiful as the sculpture. As the daughter of a former CCC enrollee she has great appreciation for the CCC. For more information: http://www.nps.gov/moru/ |
