75th
Anniversary logo project focuses on art students
Want a copy to
use at your anniversary events?
In a creative twist, Chapter #5 of
Seattle
,
Washington
, reached out to the art students of
Mariner
High School
to participate in 75th anniversary activities.
Berniece Phelps, Chapter #5 President, is a strong advocate for
educating youth to the value of CCC heritage.
She says, “There is no better time than right now, to
educate the upcoming generation and there are no better teachers than
the fellas that were in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Even today we
are surrounded by the results of their work and their work still has
lasting impact on our lives.”
Armed with guidance from President Phelps,
the students created 25 different logos.
Chapter #5 members chose three final designs that were sent to
the Board to make a final choice.
Graphics arts student, Damascus Purnell, created the favored
final choice.
Damascus
is an 11th grader at Mariner High School of Everett,
Washington. In
addition to his creative talent, he is also Captain of the basketball
team.
This creative and
thoughtful design displays a deciduous tree as its focal point and
includes the expression of “CCC. A message of commitment in
change.” This expression interprets the understanding of a student
who is the same age as the young men who enrolled in the CCC.
Damascus
, 17 years old, says that the expression represents growth and the
environment. During
the 1930s the young men of the CCC may not have understood that they
served as part of FDR’s message of commitment to change the way
America
managed its natural resources. Now,
75 years later, CCC alumni and following generation supporters are
still delivering the message that
America
needs to be committed to the cause of environmental issues
Special recognition is given to all involved in orchestrating
this 75th anniversary partnership project.
It is an example of sharing time and talent that can create a
bond between generations and the value of protecting CCC heritage.
Special thanks to: Chapter
5 volunteers Bernice Phelps and Cherie Smith for serving as the
coordinators; all students who created the designs; Linda Matthews,
Graphics Arts instructor and Mariner High School Principal, Brent
Cline for supporting public participation with the school.
