Camp Roosevelt, NF-1, the first CCC camp in America
was established on April 17, 1933. Situated in the George
Washington National Forest on the Massanutten Mountain in Ft.
Valley, VA, the first boys of the CCC stepped into this great American
experiment on a cold and rainy day that would change their lives
forever. By May on the other side of
the Massanutten in Page County, the Shenandoah
National Park was also establishing the first CCC camps within the
National Park System. Camps that served state parks, state
forests, fish hatcheries, biological stations, TVA, Soil Conservation
Service and private land all followed to make up the great CCC legacy
of Virginia.
From Virginia's Shenandoah Valley the CCC spread
across the nation like a wildfire and by July of 1933, FDR's target
number of having 250,000 enrollees at work was met.
Today Virginia's CCC heritage provides great
benefits to its citizens. Residents and visitors alike use the
vast infrastructure for work and pleasure.
Much is being done to elevate the awareness of the
CCC in Virginia. CCC Legacy members are striving to showcase
Virginia as a leader in the appreciation for its conservation heritage
and educate its citizens for a greater understanding of the impact of
the CCC in the Commonwealth.
