CCC Legacy Journal: Vol. 33
Issue 4 July August 2009
John Kalita shares his thoughts - May 20, 2009
My father died when I was 14 years old.
My mother died when I was 16 years old.
So, I was all alone. I joined
the CCC camps & ended up in Corvallis, Oregon. I had the privileged with another CCC worker from
South Bend, Indiana to cut down the trees in the Corvallis Forest to make a fire
trail. I also had the job of
dynamiting the stumps out of the ground. It was such a great experience I am thankful for. A year ago, I was awarded a bronze medal by the
Congressman of Missouri at the College of the Ozarks here in Branson, MO for my
duties in the Army. As of now, I am
89 years old and have such fine memories to look back at.
John Kalita P.S. I give thanks to the late President Franklin D.
Roosevelt who established the CCC camps Editor Note: After 62 years, John Kalita was awarded a long over due Bronze Star for his service in WWII for “exemplary performance of duty in active ground combat was in keeping with the finest tradition of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 410th Infantry Regiment and the Army of the United States.” Recognition presented by Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt and Lt. Col Gary Herchenroeder, College of the Ozarks. |
