FOR   WORK   PLAY   STUDY   &   HEALTH

The 2006 NACCCA Reunion and Annual Meeting met on September 27th-30th , 2006

Hosted at Historic White Rock Lake Park (Co. #2896) - Dallas Parks & Recreation

Work, play, study, and health was the slogan from a 1930's CCC poster, and it was also the theme of the 2006 NACCCA annual reunion held in Dallas, Texas.  Entertainment and education were the focal points of the four day event and there was a lot of work being done by the staff of the Dallas Parks & Recreation.  They cheerfully and graciously orchestrated a top-notch event that will live in the memories of the attendees for many years.  They were working hard and we were playing and enjoying every minute.

This webpage is designed to share the experiences of the event.  If you have other photos that you would like to have included, please send an email to ccc@ccclegacy.org

EVENTS SCHEDULE

DAY ONE WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 Welcome to Dallas! Thanks for the hospitality.

The lobby at the Radisson Hotel was buzzing with activity as event attendees arrived by bus and car. There was a steady stream of drop-offs from the area airports that let attendees arrive unruffled and ready to enjoy event activities. Dallas Parks Recreation coordinators greeted us as we arrived and the hotel lobby was a gathering place for meeting and greeting old and new friends.  The hospitality room became a hub for relaxing and catching up with the activities of the day. A short board meeting was held to address "housekeeping" issues.

DAY TWO THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

With buses loaded and ready to go, we headed for Winfrey Point for a Ribbon cutting at Flag Pole Shelter

tour of White Rock Lake which was built by the CCC, and a rededication of Flag Pole Hill Shelter.  A ribbon cutting ceremony at the dedication of the newly restored shelter brought dignitaries from the Dallas City Council and Park Board. An area high school band played the National Anthem and set the tone for a patriotic and enjoyable ceremony and lunch.

In the afternoon, Rosemary Rumbley led us on a tour of Dallas where we

went to the Old Court House and the exhibit at the Dallas Book

Depository.  The Dallas tour ended at Eddie Dean's Restaurant where we

enjoyed a home style meal of great food.

Sally Prouty, President and CEO of NASCC, made a special trip from

Washington to join us for the day and offered information about the new

NASCC PBS video and explained how we can participate in supporting the modern

Service Corps Programs in America.

DAY THREE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

PB 930 night CCC day certificate .jpg (430188 bytes)

A busy day took us to the Texas State Fair and the  Arboretum for a banquet, dinner and dance.  A  resolution from City Council declared "CCC Day in Dallas".

The Marilyn Monroe Exhibt held special interest for some!Texas State Fair Grounds, was the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition.  It has a unique history and the park contains the largest collection of still surviving art deco buildings that are still intact and the largest Ferris Wheel in the western hemisphere.

At the Women's museum we watched a presentation on the history of Fair Park and got to see the special Marilyn Monroe exhibit.  After a tram tour we stopped at the food concessions for the famous fair "corny dogs" which were a special treat for everyone.

Back to Winfrey point for a dedication of a Texas historic marker near the site of CCC Camp 2896, the Board Meeting and BBQ dinner.  Great meeting and great food.  The evening closed with a showing of "The Corps Network" video and remarks by Assistant Director of Dallas Parks and Recreation, Willis Winters.

DAY FIVE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1

Time to go home!  Some travelers were off to the airports as early as 4:30 am and some stayed on for another day, but everyone agreed this was a great event.  It was filled with the history and spirit for the CCC and will be remembered for a long time.  As we started on our travel back home we all knew we had been the part of something special.

The gang that made it all happen!

Thanks to the Dallas Parks & Recreation.
